STS Technical Services is hiring Senior Stress Engineers in Greensboro, North Carolina to join the aerospace industry’s most dedicated engineering teams. Position Overview:
As a Senior Stress Engineer, you’ll serve as a subject matter expert in structural analysis, working closely with FAA DERs and internal engineering teams to validate the airworthiness of advanced airframe components. This role requires a balance of classical hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and it offers a chance to make real impact in the development and certification of primary aircraft structures.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for stress analysis of composite primary structures (experience with metallic structures is highly desirable)
- Conduct detailed stress analysis using both classical hand calculation methods (Bruhn, Peery, Roark, ESDU) and FEA tools
- Prepare and author certification stress reports; collaborate with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs)
- Support and interpret structural testing activities
- Clearly communicate and justify analysis methods, assumptions, and results to both internal teams and external stakeholders
Education, Experience & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering required; master’s degree preferred
- FAA DER certification (14 CFR Part 23/25) is a significant plus but not required
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Expertise in Finite Element Analysis tools such as NASTRAN and FEMAP
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with 3D solid modeling using CATIA V5—ability to manipulate and extract data from models
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Visual Basic (VB), or MATLAB is a strong plus
Physical Requirements:
- Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise, heat, cold, dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors
- May be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions
- Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.)
- Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties
- Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions
- Effectively communicate in Business English
- Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance
- Pull, push, carry, lift, or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. or more during the work shift, with the use of Company-provided “reach assistance technology”
